Why don't our digestive acids corrode our stomach linings?

In the meantime, If your having acid reflux you can try some apple cider vingear to relieve it. And you should stop all foods that can trigger it, mainly all grains, starches, dairy and sugar. Is it ok to combine ACV and Betaine HCL, either for a single meal or in the course of a day, or any other scenario? I have variety of digestion problems – chronic constipation, in particular – due, in part, I think, to reflux and low gastric acid, and as a result have serious trouble maintaining, much less not losing more weight.

The pH test for acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD) measures how often and for how long stomach acid enters the esophagus, and how well it clears the esophagus. Done with a thin, plastic tube armed with a sensor, it measures the amount of acid backing up into the esophagus.

In general, stomach acidity will tend to filter microbes without adaptations to an acidic environment. Such adaptations include resistant cell walls, spore-forming capabilities or other traits that confer tolerance to high acidities and rapid changes in pH conditions. We’ve considered the role of the stomach as a pathogen barrier within the context of human evolution. Another potential consequence of high stomach acidity, when considered in light of other primates and mammals, is the difficulty of recolonization by beneficial microbes.

It also is possible to place a catheter with two acid sensors so that one sensor is in the stomach and the other is in the lower esophagus. If the pH sensor is left in the stomach instead of the esophagus, it is possible to determine the effectiveness of medications that shut off the production of acid in the stomach.

I feel that my bowel is being cleared out as if I have had a real detox. I am going to try to reduce the 20mg dose further for a couple of weeks before trying the HCL with pepsin. I strongly suspect that low stomach acid has been causing me many health problems recently including fatigue, I want to come off the PPI’s completely and hopefully live a normal healthy life. I will be buying some apple cider vinegar along with HCL tablets tomorrow but I understand that lemon juice in water first thing in the morning also helps. Hi Tom, thanks for reaching out.

Have had fluctuating bouts of this for years trying to stay off meds. But has become really bad lately and have got back on the medical roller coaster have a stress test booked another endoscopy & colonoscopy booked. Just sick of it. The pain I have in my chest and blocked feeling in my throat and bloating and gas is terrible. Are any of these symptoms linked to low stomach acid.

Can yeast overgrowth cause these symptoms and cause low production of stomach acid? I can take 3-4 HCL pills after a meal and not feel much.

  • I can say that I still have the occasional pain, but in taking the acid pill, I don’t have any increased pain or burning, which you would think I would have, if I indeed had too much stomach acid which was causing the pain and needed an acid reducer like Prilosec.
  • Sadly i kept getting sharp abdominal pains and i had a sharp pain in the middle of my chest right below my rib cage so i went to the hospital and they said it was acid reflux and gave me another medicine to try and it made me nauseous and more bloated and it made e burp alot more and it made me burp up my food.
  • I wish I wasn’t nauseated all the time.
  • Amylase – Amylase is an enzyme found primarily in saliva, where it acts to break down carbohydrates.

Therefore, esophageal acid exposure is frequently reported separately for different body positions (upright vs. recumbent). A further argument to “normalize” esophageal acid exposure time by calculating the percent of time that pH is less than 4.0 are observations that individual subjects spent different amounts of time in the upright and recumbent position. A final detail in reporting acid exposure time (percent time pH less than 4.0) relates to excluding meal periods from the recording time. The reason for this correction is based on observations that some foods, especially drinks (carbonated beverages, wine, juices), have pH values below 4.0 and, if not excluded, will artifactually increase reflux episodes and esophageal acid exposure time. Excluding meal periods from analysis is preferred over limiting meals to the ingestion of only “neutral” foods, as the latter approach would contradict the instructions given to patients during pH monitoring to try to reproduce situations (including meals) that may generate symptoms.

If you aren’t absorbing the nutrients from your food due to low stomach acid then a mineral deficiency could account for some of your symptoms. I am at my wits end this has gone on so long I don’t know what it is like to feel normal anymore. I suffer from a feeling of choking in my throat after I eat tightness in the chest due to excessive gas constant burping pains in my back .

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a common condition encountered in clinical practice. Gastroesophageal reflux monitoring using pH electrodes is an important tool in evaluating patients with GERD symptoms not taking acid-suppressive therapy, and the wireless pH capsule improves patient and physician acceptance of this test.

Common symptoms of GERD in children include colic, feeding problems, poor growth, frequent vomiting or coughing, heartburn, regurgitation, recurrent wheezing, pneumonia, choking, or gagging. Treatment may involve elevating the child’s bed, keeping the child upright after eating, limiting foods that seem to make the reflux worse, encouraging your child to exercise, and serving several small meals a day.

I can say that I have had many digestive issues and have never known quite why and always chalked it up to both of my parents having plenty of digestive issues. My mother- rheumatoid arthritis, appendix removed and was on prilosec for years. My father- gallbladder removed and what seems to be IBS.

I’m afraid to stop the medicine. I had been misdiagnosed as having excess acid rather than low acid nearly a year ago after getting really bad bouts of heartburn. It was only after reading about low acid and trying the Betaine HCL that I found the pain went.

That’s why it’s able to eat through the food in your stomach pretty quickly. To relieve heartburn and reflux symptoms, Dr. Koufman suggests a strict two-week “induction” diet with nothing below pH 5 – no fruit except melons and bananas, no tomatoes or onions but plenty of other vegetables, whole grains, and fish or skinless poultry. High-alkaline foods include bananas (5.6), broccoli (6.2) and oatmeal (7.2). Processed and bottled foods are particularly acidic because of federal rules requiring high acidity as a preservative, Dr. Koufman says.
