The Risks of Using Baking Soda to Reduce Stomach Acid

Not everyone with GERD has heartburn. Hiccups, dyspepsia (indigestion) and reflux (stomach acid going into the oesophagus) can affect anyone.

However, more research is needed to confirm its effects on improving stomach acid. Other than increasing stomach acid levels, raw apple cider vinegar has been associated with reducing symptoms from acid reflux, diabetes, and high blood sugar. Chew your food and take smaller bites to stimulate your digestive enzymes.

I believe you should be fine. You just need to find the appropriate dosage of Betaine HCl with pepsin and pancreatic enzymes.

Finally, I told him I feel silly about complaining, but I have constant headaches, stomach aches, a hard time eating and drinking, and a lack of general energy. I have been dealing with GERD now for 8 months. People around me seem to think I should lighten up about it because it is not like I was diagnosed with a terminal disease.

Depending on your diagnosis, your healthcare provider may give you a PPI for only a few weeks, or you may need longer treatment. Occasional heartburn is common and generally not serious. However, GERD may lead to esophagitis, an inflammation of the lining of the esophagus (food tube).

One of the doctors saw me popping antacids after lunch and asked if I had ever talked to my doctor about my heartburn. He was shocked that I had never even mentioned it! I consider myself an educated person but that was the first time I heard that long term heartburn can be a sign of GERD, and that going too long untreated, GERD can lead to esophageal cancer.

Most experts recommend waiting about two hours after eating before working out. Don’t eat before bedtime. Allow 2 hours to digest your food before lying down. This allows time for the food to pass out of the stomach and into the small intestine, rather than having it back up into the esophagus.

If you suspect someone has dyspepsia, speak to their GP or specialist nurse who can arrange further assessment to look for underlying causes and prescribe treatment. They might prescribe proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole or H2 antagonists such as ranitidine if someone has pain or heartburn.

So far, I can eat a cup of oatmeal in the morning, cup of soup at noon and cup of cereal about 5 pm, but now I feel weak and sleepy most of the time. I have tried taking a nutritional supplement but it wont stay down. I am just waiting for a new referral to another doctor, but the truth is I am much afraid and sometimes think I should just keep trying what little food stays down. I was diagnosed with GERD four years ago and I’m only 21.

Eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Don’t eat within 3 hours of bedtime. This allows your stomach to empty and acid production to decrease. If you don’t eat, your body isn’t making acid to digest the food.

Calcium is found in dairy products and in a variety of nondairy products, including dark green leafy vegetables, grains, figs, fish with soft bones, and calcium-fortified foods. Even with healthy eating and a balanced diet, one may not get enough calcium daily.

For instance, some calcium supplements may also contain vitamin D or magnesium. Check the ingredient list to see which form of calcium your calcium supplement is and what other nutrients it may contain. This information is important if you have any health or dietary concerns.
