Abdominal pain that occurs after eating may be due to indigestion. Does pain occur during menstruation? These are typical questions your doctor may ask that may help determine the cause. For example, abdominal pain that comes on suddenly may suggest a sudden event such as the interruption of the supply of blood to the colon (ischemia) or obstruction of the bile duct by a gallstone (biliary colic).
However, when nausea occurs after the first trimester, it may be a symptom of preeclampsia, which is a condition in which blood pressure becomes too high. If you’re pregnant and experience nausea into your second trimester, seek medical advice. That’s because the brain finds it hard to distinguish whether pain is coming from the heart or from the stomach and oesophagus.
In addition, seek medical attention if you start getting these symptoms in middle age, or later, or you have a strong family history of cancers in the abdomen. Any signs of possible internal bleeding is an emergency and means that you should seek medical advice without delay.
these causes include bloating, gas, colitis, endometriosis, food poisoning, GERD, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), ovarian cysts, abdominal adhesions, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, gallbladder disease, liver disease, and cancers. On the other hand, if the symptoms are of recent onset (weeks or months), progressively worsening, severe, or associated with “warning” signs, then early, more extensive testing is appropriate.
Modern advances in technology have greatly improved the accuracy, speed, and ease of establishing the cause of abdominal pain, but significant challenges remain. There are many reasons why diagnosing the cause of abdominal pain can be difficult. These are discussed on the following slides.
Some people may feel a burning sensation rising up in the chest called heartburn, while others experience a more general feeling of fullness and discomfort in the upper abdomen after a meal. Sometimes, a more localised painful sensation just below the breastbone is felt or a combination of all three.
Pancreatic Cancer Action
- This common condition is often the result of problems in abdominal and thoracic organs.
- Severe pain that occurs suddenly after vomiting or after a procedure involving the esophagus suggests a rupture of the esophagus, although this is rare.
- It often starts as general discomfort, tenderness or pain in the tummy area that can spread to the back.
- Severe kidney infections can also cause vomiting that leads to bloating.
Type 1 diabetes usually occurs during childhood, while type 2 diabetes usually occurs during adulthood, however, rates of both types of diabetes in children, adolescents, and teens is increasing. More men than women have diabetes in the US, and the disease can affect men differently than women.Warning symptoms of diabetes that men have and women do not include low testosterone (low-t), sexual problems, impotence (erectile dysfunction), decreased interest in sex, and retrograde ejaculation. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes symptoms and signs that are the same in men and women include skin infections, numbness or tingling in the feet or hands, nausea, excessive thirst or hunger, fatigue, irritability, blurred vision, weight gain, weight loss, urinary tract infections (URIs), and kidney problems. Treatment for type 1 diabetes is insulin, and treatment for type 2 diabetes are lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, getting exercise daily, and if necessary, diabetes medications.
However, the most common causes of back pain and bloating are usually due to relatively harmless, underlying conditions. If your back pain is caused by GERD or ulcers, you may need to make lifestyle adjustments.
As there is room for it to grow, it does not cause symptoms until it is quite large. Dyspepsia or indigestion is not a disease; it is a group of symptoms that cause pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen.
This involves swallowing a thin flexible tube with a camera on the end so that the endoscopist can view the inside of your oesophagus, stomach and duodenum and check for inflammation or infection. Although it is not especially pleasant, most people can tolerate just a few minutes of discomfort (the procedure is not painful) by having ananaesthetic spray to the throat. If you are apprehensive or feel you have a sensitive throat, there are alternatives to make the procedure less daunting.
True cramp-like pain suggests vigorous contractions of the intestines. Obstruction of the bile ducts by gallstones typically causes steady (constant) upper abdominal pain.
