If you suspect your baby has an acid reflux problem, consult your pediatrician. There are a number of medical tests–such as endoscopies and tests of esophageal pH –that can help diagnose cases of GERD. Babies with GERD may require special treatments, including drug therapy, to prevent choking and damage to the esophagus. I was diagnosed with a minor hiatal hernia 2 years ago. I didn’t feel much of pain except occasional acid reflux and choking sensation.
Physicians believe that the esophagus may be better able to resist the effects of stomach fluids (acid and enzymes) than the voice box. Interrupted daily activities.
All babies reflux usually in the first year of their lives. This is true.
It is always very important for a child’s pediatrician or family doctor to evaluate them for any red flags such as bile-stained or bloody vomit, or vomiting that is consistently forceful in nature. Many neurologic conditions and systemic illnesses can result in either pathologic vomiting or increase the likelihood of severe symptomatic reflux in children of all ages. But, as is often the case, something goes wrong after residency. Too many of us begin to alter our approach because of the influence of practicing in the real world and of common hardwired errors in how we interpret reality. Overuse of prescription medications, unnecessary formula hopping and potentially unsafe recommendations on sleep positioning are unfortunately widespread.
Children and adults who do not improve with medical treatment may require surgical intervention. Surgical treatment includes “fundoplication,†a procedure that tightens the lower esophageal muscle gateway (lower esophageal sphincter, or LES). Newer techniques allow this to be done in an endoscopic or minimally invasive manner.
To stress again, reassurance is often all that is needed when a baby spits up, and even when there is some concern that they might have mild to moderate GERD. So-called lifestyle modifications are all that is needed in more troublesome cases, even if all that they really do is buy a little time while the reflux resolves on its own. The risks associated with these modifications are very low. If a baby is exposed to cigarette smoke, stop it. Give smaller feeds.
They just want to be left alone. Your child may cry when you try to hold or move them.
I have been having chronic moderately severe pain and tightness starting at my lower chest area to my stomach. My general physician ran many tests (nothing), and she told me to take Ativan for anxiety since she felt I was having panic attacks. I went to a gastroenterologist and had colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy; nothing. He gave me Oscimin for stomach spasms. I saw my gynecologist, she didn’t see anything.
