GERD and chest pain: Heartburn or heart attack?

I constantly get chest pain, and on two separate occasions I have had excruciating pain in my upper back between the shoulder blades that lasted about an hour. I had pain and pressure in mid chest along with heartburn and pain radiating into my upper back. I cut gluten, all wheat products out of my diet and have no more heartburn. Chiropractors are great at fixing a hiatal hernia and can help with exercises to keep it from happening again. Look for a good chiropractor in your area for help.

Because with everything else you have to deal with, you don’t want to add gas to the list. Many of the same things that contribute to gas also cause acid reflux, which means you may feel the urge to burp more than usual. This is because people with GERD tend to unconsciously force excessive air down their esophagus, according to the Mayo Clinic. Although some people think belching can relieve acid reflux, it can actually make it worse. Although exercising a little after meals or eating more slowly can help with the immediate effects of gas caused by acid reflux, your best bet to stop burping is to directly treat your GERD.

Heart conditions that can cause chest pain in a child are very rare. They include pericarditis (an inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart), myocarditis (a viral infection of the heart), arrhythmias (abnormal fast heart rhythms), or, very rarely, blockage or other problems with the coronary arteries (the tiny vessels that carry oxygenated blood to the heart tissue). Another cardiac cause of chest pain can be due to dissection, or tearing, of the aorta, the main artery that directs blood from the heart out to the body.

People often worry about having underlying cancers, but if there are no other worrying symptoms, such as weight loss, difficulty swallowing or repeated vomiting, the risk is extremely low. Drugs that switch off acid production in the stomach, block pain messages to the brain or eliminate the gastrointestinal bacteria Helicobacter pylori (HP) can work wonders. Exercise, relaxation therapies and acupuncture may also help, though the evidence is scarce.

Inside Diseases & Conditions:

If reflux disease is present (ie, there is ulceration in the esophageal walls), reflux is most likely the source of the chest pain and should be treated. As very effective treatments are available for reflux, the pain will disappear in 90% of cases. Many people experience heartburn symptoms at night, and they can be quite unpleasant and disruptive. Not so far off from the symptom of coughing, the symptom of nighttime choking can occur because of the back-flow of stomach acid that especially occurs while laying down.

And that, those were the only symptoms I had. They did. They were actually, it was, a lot of the time it was diarrhoea and light coloured. And one of the symptoms that I was told if you’ve got something wrong with the pancreas or liver was jaundice.

  • Davinder and Ben had other unusual symptoms.
  • Moreover, the results of treatment must be evaluated on the basis of subjective responses (such as improvement of pain).
  • Life-threatening illnesses (for example, cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure) are the illnesses that capture the public’s interest and, more importantly, research funding.
  • Stomach ache or back pain are usually not symptoms of indigestion.
  • I’m having another endoscopy done next week with an event monitor for 4 days.
  • My chest still hurts on the left side of my breast bone.

I am also happy not to have been living in the US as the cost of treatment has been negligible. I was diagnosed with pleurisy a few days ago. The pain and is brutal. People in recovery are human just like anybody else!

Over the next, over the weekend I had difficulty eating, I was vomiting so obviously I just drank fluids and I had what I called baby food, like ice creams and jelly. Monday I then decided there was something quite wrong. Went to my GP, examined me, considered I had possibly some, some infection in around the area of the gall bladder, prescribed two lots of antibiotics, but before commencing those I had to go and have bloods.

It has many different possible causes, including a virus or other infection, certain illnesses, an injury to the chest, radiation therapy for cancer, or a reaction to medications. The classic symptom of pericarditis is a sharp, stabbing pain in the center or left side of the chest that worsens when you take a deep breath or lie down.

“However, you can have a sensation of a lump in the throat for other reasons, including anxiety or a hyper-reactive upper esophageal sphincter rather than reflux.” All of the previous symptoms discussed – coughing, burping, choking, difficulty swallowing – can lead to throat pain, especially when done constantly. But if you’re only experiencing a sore throat on its own, it’s most likely that it’s being caused by something other than acid reflux. Either way, it’s important to ask your doctor about what you can do to feel better. Indigestion has many different causes and doctors don’t always find out what’s causing the symptoms. Your symptoms may be triggered by acid irritating your sensitive stomach lining.
