I went to a natural nutritionist who does the stomach acid test with the machine. However, after he was told by me my symptoms and what I have done, he said the test is unnecessary since I have already proven that it is low stomach acid.
Because indigestion is a symptom rather than a disease, treatment usually depends upon the underlying condition causing the indigestion. Your doctor will rule out any underlying conditions that may be causing your symptoms. Your doctor may perform several blood tests and you may have X-rays of the stomach or small intestine. Your doctor may also suggest you have an upper endoscopy to look closely at the inside of the stomach.
The procedure involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the LES to strengthen it, prevent acid reflux, and repair a hiatal hernia. Surgeons perform this procedure through either an open incision in the abdomen or chest or with a lighted tube inserted through a tiny incision in the abdomen. There are a few ways to increase stomach acid naturally. The gentlest way that may help stimulate acid production is to drink a glass of warm or room temperature lemon water upon waking (squeeze 1/2-1 organic lemon into a glass of water). Alternatively, use a capful of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in the same way.
Fermented vegetables – such as kimchi, sauerkraut, and pickles – can naturally improve your stomach acid levels. Fermented foods and vegetables have probiotic effects that can improve digestion, fight harmful bacteria and reduce inflammation from low stomach acid. Incorporating a healthy diet can improve your digestive process, allowing the stomach to adequately break down food and absorb essential proteins into the body.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) create a chemical reaction in your stomach. The result of this reaction is carbon dioxide gas, which causes burping. So a burp within three minutes of drinking the baking soda solution may indicate an adequate level of stomach acid.
Some people develop an immune reaction against gluten and this in turn leads to damage to the lining of the intestine. People who have this condition, known as celiac disease, may experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, gas, and bloating. Damage to the intestinal lining may affect digestion and the absorption of nutrients.
Acid Reflux and Proton Pump Inhibitors
I was taking Zantac and Aleve for pain and acid reflux. It was horrible. I have eliminated gluten and dairy in my diet and drinking a prebiotic additive in my water as well as taking milk thistle and I can feel a huge positive difference. I’m having better BM’s which truly is one of life’s simple pleasures after two years of undiagnosed problems and noticing that a rash on the back of my hand that wouldn’t go away with any of the creams that were prescribed by my physician has healed.
Exercise, relaxation therapies and acupuncture may help, though the evidence is scarce. Cutting out obvious triggers (such as alcohol, spicy foods and painkillers) makes sense – but, then again, month to try this may not be the easiest. Not much of a choice. Just be aware that eating close to bedtime can cause feelings of acid reflux (also called heartburn or GERD) through the night.
Avoid distractions like TV while you’re eating. Enjoy meals at the dining room table with friends or family.
